WHACK! WHACK! WHACK! that was the repititive sound of people losing their jobs coming from halas hall on monday as the mccaskey family decided that they had enough of being the laughing stock of the NFL and terminated gm phil emery, head coach marc tressman and offensive coordinator/part-time snitch aaron kromer.
i was amazed that they ate the last three years of emery's contract as well as tressman's but good for them. when the oldest franchise in the league is worth a billion dollars (that's with a B) they shouldn't haggle over a few million dollars when it comes to restoring the image.
first step in rebuilding was hiring ERNIE ACCORSI as a senior advisor who will assist the mccaskeys in hiring their new gm. the presence of accorsi, who has spent his life in the nfl and was the gm for three different teams, will keep ted phillips and other bean counters away from football decisions.
the reaction of long time bears fans was overwhelmingly positive although most were hoping for jay cutler to get traded to complete the trifecta. nobody i spoke with feels that cutler can do the job and has rightfully earned his reputation as a coach killer.
so where to now? they may not be able to hire a gm until after the playoffs which would make it february at the earliest but hiring one as quickly as possible can only help and hopefully, the bears will follow proper protocol and hire the gm first and then the gm hires the coach and the coach hires his assistants which eliminates finger pointing and makes every hire accountable, as it should be.
my wish is for the bears to pay the piper and hire people who have done it before at the highest level. we don't need a head coach or a gm who neeeds training wheels but rather people who have been riding the bicycle SUCCESSFULLY for a while now. keep your fingers crossed.
