I'm not sure how i feel about the destruction and removal of statues because they're part of history. ROBERT E LEE was a great general and one of the top graduate at WEST POINT, who SERVED IN THE UNITED STATES MILITARY for 32 years before the civil war. He also served as the superintendent of west point and president of WASHINGTON & LEE UNIVERSITY.
Who's this washington guy hanging with robert e lee?? Well, he's SLAVE OWNER GEORGE WASHINGTON, THE FIRST PRESIDENT!!! now we have double trouble! burn the university down right now!!! Do we re-name washington d.c? how about the state of washington? the washington nationals? how about washington university in St. Louis?
how dare that slave owning bastard have another college named after him??
By the way, HALL OF FAMER TY COBB was an avowed racist and used the word 'nigger' on an everyday basis, including interviews with the press. throw him out of the HOF? I can name DOZENS of examples but enough is enough.
And here's a different guy and his point of view
1) against the abolition of slavery.
2) 'negroes' should not have the same rights as white people.
3) negroes would be more comfortable living in colonies in Africa or central america.
4) supported the constitution's position that a negro was 3/5 of a person.
5) felt that a negro could vote only if he served in the military
I think most of you would dump his statue in the river but those positions belonged to our 16th president, ABRAHAM LINCOLN, the man who freed the slaves! so I think we should take some time to think about it rather than a knee jerk reaction because current police misconduct shouldn't alter or erase american history.

I want to make this point carefully but there's no way to avoid ruffling some feathers with this point of view: Slavery was a way of life in America from the early 1600's and they served white families in a variety of ways from domestic work to working in the fields and everything in between. Only a very few had any real skills and had to be taught even the most menial tasks and many slaves, when given the chance to go free, refused to leave the farm or plantation because they had no worldly skills such as reading, writing or counting. "street smarts" were unavailable because they had never been anywhere other than the plantation and they were safe with their owners.
In NO WAY do i condone slavery but history is how we learn and slavery is now dead because of it but don't try and change history, but rather embrace it and teach young people about how it was and how it got better.
LEARN, DON'T BURN. (my new catch phrase)
ALMOST EVERYONE had slaves because that was the way it was done and whether your name was GEORGE WASHINGTON, THOMAS JEFFERSON, ANDREW JACKSON or mr. jones the farmer, you had slaves. And while LINCOLN never owned slaves, he married into a family who had many slaves. Slavery is obviously wrong but it was a way of life at the time and if you supported it BACK THEN, does it make you a bad guy? I think not.

Now it's getting ridiculous. It was bad enough when LADY ANTEBELLUM changed their name to LADY A. because they're afraid a style of architecture is going to offend someone? ante=before and bellum=war. 'before the war"
And now the DIXIE CHICKS are changing theirs to THE CHICKS. at what point did either of these groups sing anti-black or slavery songs?? DIXIE was simply a reference to a geographical area of the united states, it has no reference to blacks or slavery. ABRAHAM LINCOLN said it was the "finest song he had ever heard."
Please read the following lyrics:
I wish I was in the land of cotton
Old times there are not forgotten
Look away, look away, look away to Dixie Land
In Dixie Land where i was born
Early on one frosty morn
Look away, look away, look away to Dixie Land
I wish I was in Dixie
Away, away
In Dixie Land I'll take my stand
To live and die in Dixie
Old times there are not forgotten
Look away, look away, look away to Dixie Land
In Dixie Land where i was born
Early on one frosty morn
Look away, look away, look away to Dixie Land
I wish I was in Dixie
Away, away
In Dixie Land I'll take my stand
To live and die in Dixie
I am REALLY offended by these lyrics. total bullshit.

Change the subject, dan, before you have a coronary.
Baseball?? 60 games in a sprint to the finish and it actually helps young/bad teams that normally start hot and then dissolve in the summer heat. this time, they're playing the amount of games that would normally take them to early june so..............

Chicago FOP president-elect JOHN CATANZARA wants the mayor to eliminate the long time residency requirements for police officers. Decades ago, It made perfect sense because transportation was an issue but there's no reason today's officers shouldn't have the option. A benefit of dropping the residency rule would be more suburban candidates taking the chicago police exam. I can't tell you how many area cops have told me they originally wanted chicago p.d. but family members were against living in that cesspool. can't blame them.

Movie theaters start re-opening friday and that's a good thing for me. I LOVE going to the movies and normally, i go alone so the distancing thing is no problem for me, plus no one can steal my popcorn.

*******************
The problem for the future is that millennials are killing the theater business because they'd rather watch a movie on a 5" screen. Can't beat a big screen experience for movies like JAWS, OUT OF AFRICA, GODFATHER, HURT LOCKER, 12 YEARS A SLAVE, DJANGO UNCHAINED, ZERO DARK THIRTY and many many more. Cinematography is wasted on millennials.
**********************
Other things that the millennials are killing:
golf & baseball (takes too much of their precious time)
car sales (uber & public transportation)
cereal! (takes too much time---grab a breakfast bar as you're going out the door)
cable tv (see the 5" screen comment above)
alarm clocks (cell phones)
napkins--finally something i agree with! (paper towels are multi-use and always have been)
door bells (people text when they're a block away)

The Post Office is a whirlpool of disappearing dollars. Read the next sentences carefully. They lost FOUR BILLION in 2018 and SEVEN BILLION in 2019 and since 2007, they've LOST 78 BILLION DOLLARS! and this fiscal year, partially due to the pandemic, the forecast is 13 BILLION in losses. oh, i forgot to mention they also have 100 million dollars in unfunded pension liabilities. How are they still in business?
Uncle Dan's idea to slow the bleeding..........
an immediate hiring freeze.
