ALL SORTS OF STUFF

OK,  i admit it.  being basically house bound since my latest knee surgery, i've become a WORLD CUP soccer whore and i actually know some of the players by name, although i don't think i'll ever understand their 'offsides' rulings.  believe it or not, the game sunday between PORTUGAL and the UNITED STATES was riveting to the very end when portugal tied the game with twenty seconds to go to stay alive in the tournament and deny temporarily, advancement for our boys into the next round. thursday at 10:30 will determine who moves on and who goes home.  world cup fever....catch it!

for years, baseball has used the term 'JUNE SWOON' to describe teams that were strong in april & may but fall apart during month number three and unfortunately, the WHITE SOX have been swooning the first three weeks, going 7-13 after finishing May at .500 for the first two months.

check out these stats since June 1st:
tyler flowers  average has dropped 70 points
gordon beckham  -40 points
alexie ramirez   -30 points
plus DE AZA who sits at .210 and Dunn at .230 are still in the starting lineup.

add that to a bullpen that absolutely sucks (DONALD FREAKING BELLISARIO is the closer???), a manager who has AA skills and we're in big trouble. 86 games left and 35-51 the rest of the way is a definite reality which puts them at 92 losses.

the bright spots have been ADAM EATON, JOSE ABREU & CONOR GILLASPIE but five automatic outs each trip thru the lineup won't score many runs. do something!

i see where the WNBA's CHICAGO SKY has reached out to the lesbian community to become a big part of their fan base. big surprise there. if ever a league should fold.......

women's soccer goalie HOPE SOLO was arrested for beating up TWO family members over the weekend. ever hear her on a talk show? she scares the hell out of me. but i'm sure all charges will be dropped or the sentence will be something soft due to her celebrity.

out for now.

CUBS STUFF

Why are the chicago cubs dicking around with the shark,JEFF SAMARDZIJA? he DOESN'T want to play on the north side (would you?) but they keep playing the game and insulting him with lowball offers, the most recent being 17 million a year for 5 years.

HEADS UP, cubbies: the going rate for a #1 is 20-25 million a year so why would you insult the man with that offer? i'll tell you why. they wouldn't pay MATT GARZA and they wouldn't pay RYAN DEMPSTER and trust me, they make a whole lot less than the shark will eventually sign for so the die is already cast.  just pull the trigger and make the trade. get your 3 or 4 prospects and continue your NEVER ENDING rebuilding process. and, oh yeah, also make EDWIN JACKSON your #1 starter because i'm sure he'll take you to the promised land.

the cubs finally reacted to the pressure of the empty seats by finally promoting KRIS BRYANT to AAA baseball and while we're chatting, let's expose another north side lie.
"we want them to finish the year where they started and then re-evaluate them in the off season" was the cubs mantra involving all of their minor leaguers and their excuse for letting bryant wallow in AA despite dominating the league.

and then, with attendance falling like a rock and the fans howling, voila!! bryant gets moved up and their recent #1 draft choice KYLE SCHWARBER also gets promoted after JUST TWO WEEKS in the rookie league. what happened to off season evaluations?

THE CUB MANAGEMENT LIES AND CHEATS THEIR FANS ON A DAILY, YEARLY AND GENERATIONAL BASIS BUT THE FANS KEEP DRINKING THE KOOL AID AND LICKING THE OWNER'S BOOTS. AND YOU WONDER WHY THE REST OF THE BASEBALL WORLD HAS NO RESPECT FOR YOU?

TITLES FOR EVERYONE!

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE SAN ANTONIO SPURS, a classy bunch of guys who have reworked their contracts numerous times in order to keep the roster intact, on winning their 5th title in 15 years. HOW SWEET IT IS!

watching the meltdown of the MIAMI HEAT was just awesome and it couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of guys.  with five minutes left in the third quarter of game 5, the career of DWAYNE WADE and the 'dynasty' of the heat ended when wade had a breakaway layup and was stoned from behind by 30 year old journeyman TIAGO SPLITTER, who sent the ball into the cheap seats. at that very moment, it was over for both wade and the heat. wade is old with two bad knees but has 20 million coming next year so he'll be back but who knows about the other two?

i will tell you one thing about CHRIS BOSH and his lack of toughness.  he wouldn't have lasted 10 minutes in a driveway game with my nephews FRANK & RONNIE and would have run home crying the first time he tasted the garage door. 6'11" & 235 pounds and he wants to stand outside and shoot threes from the corner? in our driveway game, we simply drag a line with our foot at ten feet and you have to shoot inside that stripe. end of bosh.

LEBRON JAMES? the real deal and one of the best players in history but i don't like him because of the way the three amigos did their back room recruiting 4 years ago and then visited different teams like they were actually interested. maybe he learned a lesson about integrity and will play it straight this time around.

TOO TOUGH, TOO STRONG & JUST TOO DAMN BIG. congratulations to the LOS ANGELES KINGS, who taught both the BLACKHAWKS & THE RANGERS the above lesson on their way to the stanley cup.  the sad fact for the hawks was that if the puck bounces the other way in overtime of game 7, they also would have strangled the overmatched rangers. now they need to find some bulk in the off-season to make the team a little tougher because the kings will be there again next year.

hope for cub fans?  the KANSAS CITY ROYALS just moved into first place for the first time in june since 2003. long the doormats of the american league central, royals pitching and defense have elevated them to the top.  they have no power but hit the crap out of the baseball. if they're leading after the 7th inning, your team is toast.

why is it every struggling team is promoted their minor league stars except for a certain team on the north side?

manny ramirez?

ODDS & ENDS

I followed up on the school security issue and here's some hard numbers.  if you install airport grade metal detectors in each doorway @ $4000 per door x 10 doors and figure 100k for the police presence annually, you've locked the school down for an initial investment of $140,000 followed by an annual police cost of 100k. so they impose a special tax for 'school safety' of one hundred dollars per kid to cover the cost of the program.  or would you rather send them off to school 'as is' and keep your fingers crossed?

i see where criminal JESSE JACKSON JR. is hoping to get out of prison just in time to get a presidential pardon for his sins.  no different than you or me under the same circumstances, right?

i did think it was cool that PRESIDENT OBAMA made a surprise visit to the troops in afghanistan on memorial day. now if he would just bring everyone home. THIRTEEN YEARS is a very long to be fighting and for what? and spare me the 'military significance' of that hell hole. nobody even knew the name of that place before 9/11.

speaking of which, i see where cities in IRAQ are falling back into the hands of the bad guys.  the same cities where over 4,000 americans gave their lives to gain control of the same. and then we left. why were we there in the first place??? oh yeah, weapons of mass destruction. and how many did we find?????  i guarantee you.....in less than 5 years, iraq will be no different regarding the taliban and women's rights than they were for two thousand years leading up to september 11.

seventy years since the D-DAY invasion in france, a day in which the final domino began to fall on hitler.  a good friend of our family, JOHN VANSCHLOCTEREN, was part of the invasion and his widow AUDREY still writes about his heroic day in 1944.  john left us last year in his 90's but his fighting spirit lives on with audrey.  God bless.

think you have problems with plants and trees dying out? the city of chicago has removed almost 30,000 trees in three years due to disease and other health factors but have only replaced 12,000.

video gaming in your local taverns was red hot starting in the summer of 2012 but i just read where revenues fell 2% in april of 2014. a trend or an exception? something to keep an eye on.

the mayor of chicago wants to know why north siders get a simple ordinance ticket for smoking pot but south side blacks get taken into custody for the same offense.  just a guess on my part.......attitude?

and a fond farewell to MAYA ANGELOU who was many things to many people.  a cool chick.  r.i.p.

T'S TIME RIGHT NOW

ARE YOU CONVINCED YET?? 74 school shootings in a year and a half!! THAT'S A SHOOTING EVERY 8 DAYS! we have to lock the schools down in order for the kids to survive and i don't want to hear from all the bleeding hearts about making our schools into prisons.

NOBODY wants to spend millions on security but it's time. a full time officer on every campus so he knows the kids and at least has a chance to identify strange behavior plus a chance to dissect rumors provided to him by the students.

stick your civil rights in your pocket.  you come on my campus and you're subject to search at ANY time, adult or student. EVERY visitor must walk thru the detectors and the first one who cops an attitude is simply treated like a threat and immediately taken down and arrested for failure to comply.

metal detectors on EVERY door and every other security measure to make sure your loved one doesn't come home in a body bag. only clear backpacks should be allowed and the officer will be able to turn over and shake out backpacks and make arrests based on the content. record their names on a database that there was an occasion to search that individual.

too much for your little darling? then quit your job and home school him. simple

this is a national epidemic that has to be stopped and stopped now. the figures over the past year and a half clearly indicate a rise in shooting incidents. EVERY EIGHT DAYS! where is the next one?

SPORTS OF ALL SORTS

What a time for my computer to die! so much happening so let's try to catch up.

MANNY RAMIREZ? MANNY RAMIREZ? even the strongest cub fan has to be shaking his head. "he's going to mentor our minor leaguers and show them the ropes" is exactly what came out of JED HOYER'S mouth. a quick review of manny's career.....two suspensions for PED's, the second for 100 games which forced his retirement. WALKING to first base on a grounder to short because he wanted to be traded from cleveland and coming late to the park because he just didn't feel like being on time.  yeah, that's the guy i want working with my prospects.

kudos to the BLACKHAWKS for their long run in the playoffs before losing to a better team.  the hawks are the best overall team in chciago and should be a power house for another five years.

i still want to be JEFF SAMARDZIJA'S agent because that guy is going to ring the big money bell when he signs his next contract. maybe then he can afford a haircut.

maybe it's just wishful thinking on my part but the CHICAGO BEARS look like real super bowl contenders with the added muscle on defense. now just keep JAY CUTLER upright.

and good luck to JORDAN LYNCH, a free agent signee from MOUNT CARMEL high school trying to win a spot as a running back behind MATT FORTE.  lynch is a likeable local kid who took NIU to several bowl games.

WORLD CUP FEVER????? no.

SPURS/HEAT. whoyagot???? i think the spurs can handle LBJ & friends in a long series and wouldn't that be the perfect way for superstar TIM DUNCAN to ride off into the sunset?

speaking of hoops, if DERRICK ROSE is healthy and the bulls replace CARLOS BOOZER with either KEVIN LOVE or CARMELO ANTHONY, aren't they immediate contenders?
the critique on both is lack of defense but did boozer ever stop a shot in his four years?

and disregard all the rumors about COACH THIBS heading to another team.  he knows how close the bulls are and with the heat running out of time, thibs sees the possibilities of controlling the eastern conference if they're healthy.

the WHITE SOX have surprised most of the prognosticators by playing .500 baseball despite some brutal injuries. GM RICK HAHN did a great job by bringing in JOSE ABREU & ADAM EATON in the off season which has helped the pale hose survive the frequent visits to the emergency room.  they're not contenders but they're fun to watch on offense.

more next week.

MORE STUFF TO TALK ABOUT

so all i'm reading now about SGT. BOWE BERGDAHL is that he's a traitor and abandoned his post five years ago, knowing he would be taken into custody by the taliban. but i have one question burning in my skull.  if bergdahl was a traitor, why would we negotiate for his release, let alone give up 5 for 1 to secure his release? what better punishment for a defector than to spend the rest of your life in that god forsaken country.  something doesn't smell right.

the jungle has started their warm weather recreation, namely killing & maiming their own. since mid-april, the unofficial count is 41 dead and 119 wounded.  in just six freaking weeks. wait until the temps stay in the 80's & 90's around the clock.

i just read where there's a shortage of 9 mm ammunition. please read above paragraph and connect the dots.

the seattle city council  approved a minimum wage of FIFTEEN DOLLARS AN HOUR starting in april of 2015, making it the highest minimum wage in the country. around my house, workers make about nine bucks an hour full time and i'm not sure the local business guy could afford a 66% increase in payroll.

i'm a huge advocate of the death penalty and when i hear or read about death row, i automatically think that blacks are the number one population awaiting execution but the fact of the matter is whites are the leaders,  43% to 41% with 12% latino. surprised? me too.

can you name the five methods of execution in the united states?  lethal injection, electrocution, hanging, gas chamber and firing squad. in some states, prisoners can actually chose their method of dying.

i was recently in las vegas for five days and stayed at MANDALAY BAY which is a spectacular and expensive property. three swimming pools, 47 restaurants, a shark exhibit and impeccable service but a vodka & cranberry at the pool will cost you sixteen bucks. that's right, sixteen, as in 16. even if you can't stay there, take the time to visit the hotel but drink water.

on the same trip and at the opposite end of the strip, we visited the rotating TOP OF THE WORLD restaurant at the stratosphere hotel, located 800 feet above ground with an incredible view of the strip. now the stratosphere is a dump as far as hotels go but this restaurant has exceptional food to go along with the view. even if you're not hungry, you're welcome at the bar for a beverage after dark.  worth the trip for sure.

finally, the story you'll be reading about all summer and then some is the tragedy known as the VA hospitals. i have several friends who are veterans and need regular medical treatment for long term problems and they've told me horror stories for years about waiting hours for their appointment, lost records, incorrect prescriptions (imagine this---getting ear drops for your eye infection....it happened) and being unable to get replacement parts for a c-pap sleeping machine even though the doctor told them the machine was useless without a new part.

plus i also have had conversations with a couple who both work at a VA facility and they've confirmed all of the atrocities listed in the original reports but as the male said, "i've been there 20 years but if you start making noise about patient abuse, you suddenly get transferred to another hospital out of state. i've seen it happened more than once so you learn to zip it because it doesn't pay to be a whistle blower. the system here is broken and has been for a long time."

our veterans deserve better. let's see what happens.

thoughts & things

What a time for my computer to die!  so much going on over the last few weeks so let's see if we can catch up.

the recent trade of 5 terrorists for the return of SGT. BOWE BERGDAHL is the hot button issue of the week.  i'm not sure why it wasn't 1 for 1 but after five years in captivity, he deserves to come home.  there were rumors that he was doomed if the deal wasn't made when it was. i wish him & his family well.  trading hostages is a tough situation.

41% of chicago students who are accepted into the special magnet schools are white. big surprise. i can just see terrell from the jungle sitting in his interview with his butt crack hanging out and his ball cap turned sideways saying "sup?"

how did this happen? well, in 2010, a federal judge ruled those four  specialized schools in chicago no longer had to use racial percentages....they simply had to fill their schools with excellent students and they have done just that. and the students wear uniforms, sign discipline slips and are required to maintain 'superior' attendance.

and now to even the playing field for those poor children in the jungle, they will have to achieve substantially LOWER test scores than white students in order to graduate. huh?
the old standard of everyone having to achieve a certain grade (like 70% to pass) now goes out the window with whites having to score approx 10% higher in order to graduate. i'm sure this will help educate the minorities. right.

kudos to GOVERNOR PAT QUINN for signing the marriage equality act for illinois.  doesn't matter what side you take in this issue, it was the right thing to do.  in twenty years, no one will give it a second thought except right wing extremists like BRUCE RAUNER and his cronies.  there's always going to be a few just like those who still oppose equal rights for women. get over it.

speaking of unbending individuals, i see where the catholic church has accelerated their search for a replacement for the ailing CARDINAL FRANCIS GEORGE. i wish him well but there's a guy who should have been put out to pasture long ago. his views on many social issues are nearly prehistoric and have made many a jaw drop.

want lower taxes and better services? move to INDIANA where an average home buyer will get 20% more house for the money and have 40% lower property taxes, cleaner air and less traffic/pollution which also makes the move inviting.

finally, it had to happen.  several companies have opened in the chicago area that specialize in designing women's clothing that conceals their weapons.  just like 'no panty line', these designers produce 'no lumps' so the bads guys can't tell if you're packing. gotta love it. bye for now.
