for all practical purposes, baseball in chicago came to an end this week as the white sox proved once again that they can't play with the big boys by getting whacked on consecutive nights by the angels and falling 7 games behind the streaking tigers, who have won 16 of the last 24 while the sox were playing (guess what?) .500 baseball prior to this weekend.
against the big 6 in the american league, the sox are 20-29 and are doomed to a losing record vs. winning teams as they only have six games left against the tigers in september. (i eliminated cleveland fron the equation because they're also pretenders at .500) BUT WAIT! that means the rest of their games are against struggling ball clubs, right?? that's correct but guess what? they have a cumlative record of 11-16 against minnesota, kansas city & toronto so i do believe the handwriting is clearly written on the wall. it would take a TOTAL collapse by the tigers for the sox to have a chance. so who's responsible for this mess? read on.
KENNY WILLIAMS must be held accountable for this fiasco known as jake peavey, alex rios and adam dunn. he accepted all the kudos in 2005 for building a winner so now he must face the firing squad for strangling this franchise financially for the next 4 years. pro sports are based on 'what have you done for me lately' and always have been because you're paid to produce and kenny has failed miserably. when you start getting compared to jim hendry, it's really time to start packing. RICK HAHN will slide right into the GM slot.
OZZIE GUILLEN? i think he's gone to florida. ozzie won't stay if kenny does and that's pretty much a sure thing but even if kenny is given his walking papers, ozzie might find that job with the marlins irresistible because his entire family is in florida. p.s.--if ozzie goes south, watch for juan pierre to follow as his contact runs out this year and he's an unrestricted free agent.
so the sox didn't make it to labor day and the north siders were done by memorial day. the bulls are on strike and hockey is two months away so THANK GOD the nfl settled their differences. GO BEARS!
