A collection of assorted thoughts to clean out the 'in' basket before i head south for a couple of months:
RAHM EMANUEL, who has just short of a gazillion dollars in his campaign war chest, will CRUSH his four opponents in the upcoming primary.
broadway star JOEL GREY has admitted that he's gay. REALLY?
think people in the southwest have problems with drought? brazil is 80% under the normal rainfall amount and turns the water on for residents just TWICE A WEEK. yes, that's the same brazil which is hosting the summer olympics next year. what a picture. maybe BOSTON can sell them some snow.
how about the cat in tampa that rose from the dead? gets hit by a car and the owner is so distraught that the neighbor has to dig the grave and deposits BART, hereby known as BART THE WONDER CAT into the hole. five days later, bart digs himself out of the shallow grave.
Just when i thought that cuba would be in my travel plans, PRESIDENT RAUL CASTRO grinds everything to a halt by DEMANDING the return of guantanamo bay and financial compensation for damages from the united states. raul needs to learn that hotels, tourists and a more lenient trade agreement would revive his country. don't kill hte goose.
want some good tv? watch "EMPIRE" on wednesday night. most of the characters are black and they take you into the realm of black music, street slang, bad fashion, worse makeup and excessive alcohol and drug fueled behavior. not to mention a whole bunch of gold jewelry. it's well written and is episodic in nature so try to catch the first three episodes. COOKIE is my absolute favorite.
former governor PAT QUINN dropped the ball when at the last minute, he decided to not issue medical marijuana licenses to a list of approved companies because he felt the issue was 'too hot' and instead left it on incoming governor BRUCE RAUNER'S desk. "a stunning change of heart" by quinn, said one of his cronies.
the official snow measurement out of CHICAGO O'HARE is about 15 inches for the winter but LAKE VILLA has only recorded half of that. a far cry from last year.
DRONES have created a whole new set of problems for security teams protecting world leaders. one was found on the lawn of the white house this week and it's only a matter of time until drones lose their innocence with some type of explosive attack.
UBER, the world wide company offering on-demand taxi service is in more hot water. a woman in INDIA has filed suit alledging she was raped in an uber cab. she joins other victims in LOS ANGELES, CHICAGO & SAN FRANCISCO.
MEASLES!!!!! i thought that disease was long gone but apparently not. a thousand reported cases with the majority in ARIZONA & CALIFORNIA.
it looks like MITT ROMNEY has finally run out of gas. it seems former supporters are now throwing their weight towards JEB BUSH.
finally, it's time to make your pick for the SUPER BOWL. WHOYAGOT??????
adios for now and we'll talk in the spring!

the recent death of ERNIE BANKS brought back some memories and here's a couple:
when i was a kid, the one thing that always caused a ruckus was when my brother and i started to "discuss" the relative merits of the two shortstops in town, LUIS APARICIO of the white sox and ERNIE BANKS of the cubs. my guy with the sox was fast, led the league in stolen bases and was a premier defensive player. banks was mr. personality, a prodigious home run hitter and also good defensively. after about 5 minutes of "is so" and "is not," the discussion normally deteriorated into a wrestling match in the living room and if dad was home, we both got tossed outside to finish in the back yard. (yes, my brother always won the match)
ERNIE BANKS was one of a kind. i had the pleasure of talking with him on numerous occasions at baseball card shows and i never saw him in a bad mood and he ALWAYS had time for the fans. he even remembered that i was a police officer and he would stage whisper "five-oh, five-oh" when i approached his table, all with a big grin on his face.
sometimes he would pretend like he dropped his pen under the autograph table and disappear just so he could untie somebody's gym shoe. when they knelt down to fix it, ernie would pop up and repeatedly say "who's next? who's next?" and then just crack up at his own joke.
sometime around 2002, bruce bartosz & i were at a show in rosemont to collect some items for his green bay packer collection. i was walking with a cane and when we went to leave and it was pouring so bartosz went across the street to get the car. while i was waiting, ernie walked out and we talked for a minute until bartosz pulled up in the circle drive. i asked ernie if he wanted a ride to the restaurant across the street so he could stay dry and he accepted.
he got in and i introduced him to bruce, who shook hands and started to exit the circle drive. ernie says "oh, i forgot my briefcase. can you go back to the front door?" so bartosz navigates the ONE WAY circle drive at the convention center and when he reaches the front door, ernie suddenly remembers that he gave the briefcase to his agent. "sorry about that, we can go."
bruce heads out again and ernie now declares that he forgot his umbrella. bartosz exhales not-so-quietly and fights the congestion back to the front door. ernie is right next to bartosz in the front seat and he's holding his hands over his mouth to stifle his laughter as bruce concentrated on the city-like traffic. when we reach the door to get the 'forgotten' umbrella, ernie declares that "the rain looks like it's letting up and what's a few raindrops anyway?"
as we depart for the third time, ernie suddenly says "stop!" and bruce damn near sends both of us thru the windshield when he slams the brakes. "what's wrong?" ernie pats bruce on the shoulder and says, "if you don't mind, i'll walk because all you do is drive in circles!" ernie then belly laughed and exited the truck. i laughed all the way home and after a few minutes, even bruce laughed.
he loved the game, the fans, the competition and life in general. godspeed, ERNIE.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
********************************
i'm a little curious about terminally ill FRANCIS GEORGE, the homophobic cardinal of the catholic church. for years, he's turned his back on the gay community and publicly made them feel unwelcome in the church. what if the doctors came to him and said his cancer could be cured but only with a blood transfusion.............from a gay man. whaddya think the cardinal would do?
*********************************************
UBER, the company which provides cheap taxi-like rides is under fire after two well publicized sexual assault incidents in chicago & boston. look for the city to implement much stricter hiring guidelines to protect the riders.
************************************************
under a new illinois law, children under the age of 18 who have seizures will be able to qualify for medical marijuana. watch for a major breakout of students flopping on the floor during english class and promptly asking for a doobie when the 'seizure' is over.
*********************************************************************************
PERSON OF THE YEAR
does the name CRYSTAL MANGUM ring a bell? she was the fine upstanding exotic dancer who in 2006 accused the DUKE UNIVERSITY lacrosse team of gang raping her at a team party, an accusation that later proved to be totally false but caused untold damage to the individuals named in her complaint as they either quit school or transferred and the lacrosse program was terminated and all related scholarships revoked.
after the accusations, a background check on this fine young lady revealed a rich history: she had at least two other allegations of rape (both eventually dismissed as 'unfounded'), was dishonorably discharged from the navy after becoming pregnant by a man other than her husband, was involved in a high speed chase with police after she stole a taxi and was indicted for attempted murder when she tried to burn down her boyfriend's apartment.
but crystal finally climbed the mountain in 2011 when she stabbed her boyfriend to death with a pair of scissors and was sent to prison for 18 years. well, crystal is now filing an appeal of her conviction, accusing almost everyone involved in the case with some type of sexual misconduct and her conviction was politically motivated.
best of luck crystal.
******************************************
the flu epidemic has now spread to 36 states. do you get a flu shot? me neither.
**************************************
do you drive a newer volkswagen? a recall is in progress because the fuel line spurts gas onto the hot engine and pipes and sets the car on fire.........while you're driving! talk about testing your reflexes.
*******************************************
i am really ticked at actor SEAN PENN. he just announced his engagement to CHARLIZE THERON. i can't believe she didn't wait for me.
*******************************************
beginning of the end? movie theatre ticket sales were down five billion dollars this year. eventually, no one (except me) will attend a theatre because of all the at-home apps available.
**************************************
and finally, if you needed a bloody mary on new year's morning or any other morning, just stop in at the SUNDA RESTAURANT in downtown chicago and here's what they offer: 32 ounces served in a hurricane type glass garnished with (get ready) braised pork belly, roasted duck, snow crab, roasted potatoes, egg roll, broccoli, bacon slices and a radish. ALL ON TOP. with a very long straw.
AND TOPPED WITH A GRILLED CHEESE AND SUSHI!!!
for the low, low price of just forty bucks. but think about it.....$40 buys you the drink AND a meal. yowsa.

HAVE A GREAT NEW YEAR!

WHACK! WHACK! WHACK! that was the repititive sound of people losing their jobs coming from halas hall on monday as the mccaskey family decided that they had enough of being the laughing stock of the NFL and terminated gm phil emery, head coach marc tressman and offensive coordinator/part-time snitch aaron kromer.
i was amazed that they ate the last three years of emery's contract as well as tressman's but good for them. when the oldest franchise in the league is worth a billion dollars (that's with a B) they shouldn't haggle over a few million dollars when it comes to restoring the image.
first step in rebuilding was hiring ERNIE ACCORSI as a senior advisor who will assist the mccaskeys in hiring their new gm. the presence of accorsi, who has spent his life in the nfl and was the gm for three different teams, will keep ted phillips and other bean counters away from football decisions.
the reaction of long time bears fans was overwhelmingly positive although most were hoping for jay cutler to get traded to complete the trifecta. nobody i spoke with feels that cutler can do the job and has rightfully earned his reputation as a coach killer.
so where to now? they may not be able to hire a gm until after the playoffs which would make it february at the earliest but hiring one as quickly as possible can only help and hopefully, the bears will follow proper protocol and hire the gm first and then the gm hires the coach and the coach hires his assistants which eliminates finger pointing and makes every hire accountable, as it should be.
my wish is for the bears to pay the piper and hire people who have done it before at the highest level. we don't need a head coach or a gm who neeeds training wheels but rather people who have been riding the bicycle SUCCESSFULLY for a while now. keep your fingers crossed.

BLACK MONDAY LOOMS
As we prepare to say good-bye to MARC TRESSMAN & his assistants, one has to wonder....who's next? fans are screaming for a trifecta of head chopping but i'm afraid we're stuck with GM PHIL EMERY and JAY CUTLER for a while longer. the bears don't mind paying tressman the final year of his contract for doing nothing but cutler and emery both have multiple years left on their deals so you'll have to be satisfied with a body count of one. WHO'S NEXT?
REX RYAN?........... still young at 52 but a 45-50 record with the jets and no playoff appearances since 2010 makes one pause. maybe too bombastic for the maccaskey family.
JIM HARBAUGH?........51 years of age but his ship is sailing towards michigan and it will take about eight million dollars to make it change course.
DAVE TOUB?............ also 52, he was the bears special teams coach and highly successful during his tenure in chicago. passed over last time when lovie was fired so he left for kansas city where he still runs special teams. never a head coach.
MIKE SHANAHAN?.........62 and a local boy with two super bowl rings in his pocket from his days in denver but bellied up in washington with a 24-40 record. is 62 too old to be a head coach when it involves a total overhaul of the program?
DERRELL BEVELL....only 44 but coaches the lethal seattle offense and was a quarterback in college. never a head coach.
TODD BOWLES?.......51 and recently signed a three year extension as defensive coordinator with the arizona cardinals but all assistant's contracts have escape clause for a head coaching job. however, bowles appears to be very content working for bruce arians, who, as we all know, was passed over for marc tressman.
feel free to enter your own choice because i'm confused. the best candidates seem to be defensive coaches but don't you need an offensive guy for cutler?
or do you trade cutler after you hire the defensive guy? and there are teams who would love cutler as their quarterback, namely the jets, rams, titans and maybe even the browns. i'd be very happy with a couple of draft choices and let's start over.
the CHICAGO BULLS are starting to fire on all cylinders as they continue to get healthy and run down all the teams that were ahead of them in the east. three weeks ago they were the seventh seed in the eastern conference but after winning 10 of 12 and currently six in a row, they're now fourth and just two games from the top seed.
in their division, they lead cleveland by three and have double digit leads on two others after only two months of play. STAY HEALTHY and we're going to have some fun in may & june.
the BLACKHAWKS are also running wild and are mirroring the success of the bulls. seventh in the conference standings at the start of the month, they're now second and only two points behind anaheim for the top seed in the west............and home ice advantage throughout the playoffs. the hawks have shrugged off lenghty injuries to PATRICK SHARP and the drunken COREY CRAWFORD with incredible depth and a great goaltending situation.
in their division, which is the toughest in hockey, they finally passed the teams that were red hot coming out of the gate and now the cream continues to rise to the top. again, STAY HEALTHY and we'll have some fun in may & june.
the cubs banged the drum when they signed a manager and a pitcher but the WHITE SOX brought the full symphony orchestra with their signings. baseball in chicago might be interesting enough to where people actually watch a game or two in april & may. maybe.
finally, will notre dame embarrass themselves again in a bowl game? we'll all find out on tuesday afternoon when they take on LSU in the music city bowl.

IF I WERE KING......
Throughout the year, i constantly say "if i were king....." and then add what i would do in a certain situation. so here's some of the ones i jotted down, in no particular order. enjoy.
IF I WERE KING.......the 'cool' people who insist on taking photos with their cell phones at a concert or a play AFTER everyone has been warned? security would rip it out of their hands, smash it on the floor with the heel of their boot and then immediately eject the violating party from the theatre.
there would be a sacred list of a dozen or so christmas carol classics like 'silent night' or 'silver bells' and no one would be allowed to prostitute the originals with a jazzed up version of the song. i almost gagged when MICHAEL MACDONALD jazzed up the second half of 'white christmas' at a recent 'evening with' at the genesee. and while you're at it, also leave the star spangled banner alone.
sex crimes against children would result in chemical castration for the guilty party.
some chicago sports team would have to win a championship once every three or four years.
people who wait to get to the register before they start LOOKING for their money would be required to go to the back of the line just for being stupid.
IF I WERE KING, it would snow two inches the night of december 23rd which would give the plow guys time to clear the roads for holiday travel and still be home with their families for the holiday. not to mention we'd all have a white christmas. there would be no snow for new year's eve.
banks would start giving out full sized wall calendars like they did for years. every month a new photo of the corresponding season and room to write appointments on the individual days. i have zero need for a 2"x 4" magnetic
calendar that i can't read anyhow.
people who smoke would NOT be able to sue the tobacco companies when they get sick. they know the dangers when they start. that's like an alcoholic suing seagrams when he gets cirrhosis of the liver. no surprise. deal with it. it was your choice.
there would be an EIGHT TEAM college football playoff. four is just not enough.
semi-trailer trucks would not be allowed on the expressway or tollways between 7-9 in the morning and 4-6 in the afternoon.
there would be no more thursday night football in the NFL.
gift cards would not be allowed as christmas presents. can you get any lazier than that? and while we're at it, only half of your christmas presents could be bought on-line. the other half? get off your dead butt and go to a store and actually see a potential gift before buying it.
athletes who use ANY illegal drugs would be banned for life. first time. no warnings. no second chances. they know exactly what they're doing when they use them.
people under 18 and over 65 would receive free medical services. no deductibles. free. including medicine.
christians would all have some type of lighted christmas decoration on their house or in the yard.
stores would be closed on holidays. all of them.
that's just some of them but i'm tired of typing.

Don't read this if you're overly sensitive to differing opinions.
***************************************************************
One of the most difficult cases to investigate as a police officer is sexual assault, a crime which constitutes a total violation of the victim and leaves long lasting pyschological scars and a total change in how the victim looks at the world.
it's not a crime of passion or lust but rather a crime of anger & disrespect for the woman.
which leads me to this........how in the hell is BILL COSBY still walking the streets? TWENTY SIX allegations of rape have popped up over the last month but there's one huge problem with all of the accusers. they've all waited TWENTY FIVE YEARS or more to point the finger of guilt at cosby and he won't even address the allegations, stating thru his lawyer that "we won't dignify these allegations with a response."
and why would they?? the statute of limitations has long since expired which poses the question: why did ALL of the victims not report it in a timely manner? any delay in reporting a sexual assault with "immediate outcry" seriously hurts the prosecution of the predator..........and yes, they will strike again & again if no one reports them.
#############################################
and now the other side of the coin: is this a case of dominos where everyone jumps on board with their own allegation after the first complaint goes public, looking to cash in on the cosby fortune? i understand some victims just wanting to forget about it but all FIFTEEN? that absolutely defies the law of averages in reporting a rape by about 60%.
if you're dealing with three decades of time, all you have to do is coordinate the alleged attack with an old ticket stub or newspaper article that has cosby appearing in a particular city and then you're ready to cry rape as loud as you can......and cash in with the others. then the next question: what percentage of sexual assalt reports are false?
most rape statistics will put the false reports at just 2% and based on experience, i can tell you one thing for certain: the 2% do more damage to the true victims and affect prosecutions for years to come. prosecutors, defense attorneys, judges, police officers and other officers of the court have long memories when they waste a lot of their resources investigating a bogus claim and the next time a real victim walks thru the door, they're greeted with a raised eyebrow.........and by the way, the liars who affect so many lives are rarely prosecuted for filing a false police report.
###########################################
so which is it? did cosby drug & sexually assault all of those women? probably not.
are there some false allegations against him? almost definitely.
did he drug and sexually assault some of them? maybe.
but prove it after 25 years. ZERO physical evidence and cosby ain't talking.
can the victims get any satisfaction after waiting so long to go public with their complaints? MAYBE cosby might be forced to retire a little earlier than he had planned BUT he's 77 years old and richer than fort knox and i guarantee you that he will have more than his share of supporters.
lessons learned for everyone, i hope.

can the victims get any satisfaction after waiting so long to go public with their complaints? MAYBE cosby might be forced to retire a little earlier than he had planned BUT he's 77 years old and richer than fort knox and i guarantee you that he will have more than his share of supporters.
lessons learned for everyone, i hope.
