So now you know EXACTLY who they are. the BEARS are an average team but not very good and certainly not excellent. they'll continue to be competitive against other average teams, occasionally beat a very good team and normally handle the bottom feeders but 8-8 is the neighborhood where they are and will continue to be.
a swiss cheese defense and a quarterback who is consistenly ranked between 14 & 18 in the ratings will continue to keep them mediocre for years to come. JAY CUTLER is a good but not great quarterback (noticing a pattern here?) who is signed for the NEXT SEVEN YEARS. ouch.
i think defensive back CHARLES WOODSON of the packers said it best a few years ago: "all we have to do is be patient and eventually jay will throw it to one of us." and nothing cutler has done since that quote was made will change anyone's mind.
WHY HAVEN'T I READ THAT RONALD BELISARIO HAS BEEN WAIVED BY THE WHITE SOX? his contract expired on monday and in his final pay envelope should also be a bus ticket to anywhere but chicago.
HOW BAD IS BASEBALL IN CHICAGO? both teams finish 73-89 and both teams were 17 games behind the division winners. sheesh.
a quick review of both teams:
the sox improved 10 games this season with the additions of JOSE ABREU & ADAM EATON but they need to visit the pitching department at their local baseball store and stock up on arms. they're going to be fine offensively for 2015 but you can't win without catching the ball and the sox were 12th defensively out of 15 teams. way too many errors and when you give teams an extra out, you're asking for trouble.
they got rid of dead weight in ADAM DUNN, ALEJANDRO DE AZA & GORDON BECKHAM plus the retirement of PAUL KONERKO will open the door for a younger player with a future (no offense, paulie).
now if they can move DAYAN VICIEDO for some pitching, that would be just fine with me. they led the american league in blown saves this year AND leads given up after the 7th inning. and no, they don't want EDWIN JACKSON.
speaking of jackson, THEO EPSTEIN'S first signing is 14-33 over his first two seasons with a 5.50 e.r.a. AND the cubs still have him for two more years at 11 million per year! nice.
everyone on the north side is holding their breath awaiting the arrival of the full contingent of the 'magnificent seven' from the minor leagues but tread lightly, cub fans. three of them surfaced this season but only JORGE SOLER showed he has major league potential. JAVY BAEZ & ARISMENDY ALCANTARA tore up the league the first time around but then sank like the titanic once pitchers found out their numerous weaknesses and they hit .169 & .205 respectively.
and now we wait for KRIS BRYANT, KYLE SCHWARBER, ADDISON RUSSELL & ALBERT AMORA to fill out the roster and carry the cubs to the promised land.
just like COREY PATTERSON did. and MARK PRIOR. and hall of shamers like TODD HUNDLEY, MILTON BRADLEY, BOBBY HILL, HE SOP CHOI, CESAR IZTURIS, RICH HILL and the immortal FELIX PIE did over the past decade or so. what a group.
BRING ON THE HAWKS & THE BULLS! later.........

the commissioner of the NFL, ROGER GOODELL, makes 44 million dollars a year but will soon be headed to the unemployment line due to his mishandling of the domestic violence issue.
we've all seen the elevator video but goodell claims he never saw it although the footage was delivered to the nfl offices months ago and RAY RICE admitted to goodell that he knocked his then girl friend out cold. goodell treats domestic violence like it's a burden FOR HIM.
the irony....if you beat a dog like MICHAEL VICK did a few years ago, you get a two year suspension. beat your wife? take a seat for just two games. seriously, that's what he did. think it's time for a new commissioner?
NIK WALLENDA announced he's walking a tight rope across the CHICAGO RIVER without a net and then between buildings on november 2nd. i watched this guy walk across the grand canyon a few months ago and he is fearless. and crazy. his grandfather was walking between buildings in PUERTO RICO about thirty years ago and a gust of wind sent him to meet his maker. better luck to nik on his chicago walk. they have to work out some permit issues but i'm sure that it'll happen.
alderman BOB FIORETTI threw his hat in the ring for mayor of chicago but he has a lot of baggage with financial issues from prior campaigns. if you can't balance your books while running for alderman, then why would you want him for mayor? fioretti's candidacy hurts possible candidate KAREN LEWIS, the head of the chicago teacher's union. they'll split the anti-RAHM vote which should leave emmanuel enough wiggle room to get re-elected.
any bets on whether we'll be sending troops back to the middle east? we approved weapons and air strikes so far. stay tuned.
the PRESIDENT couldn't win with his national broadcast last week no matter what he said. his plan would have been attacked no matter what. if he said blue, the other side would have screamed for red and vice-versa.
i don't mean to be insensitive but the ISIS issue is way too complicated for a simple plan like the president's and as gruesome as beheading a reporter is, is it worth a new war? stick to the drones and chop them up one by one but the victims have to be considered 'casualties of war' who knew the risk by working overseas.
but we did send 3,000 troops to AFRICA to help in the fight against ebola. last time i wrote, the death count was 1,200. now it's 2,300 and climbing with another 3,000 sick. the WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION said the totals could double every three weeks and it could cost one billion dollars to fight the epidemic with no guarantee of success.
DONALD TRUMP'S atlantic city casino, TRUMP PLAZA, became the 4th casino to close this year in that beleaguered ocean front city but trump did have a victory in chicago when the mayor introduced a bill to prohibit signs like the trump sign that illuminates the riverwalk area. that would leave trump's 2900 square foot sign as the only one on a building in that area. DONALD 1, RAHM 0.
that's it for now. have a great weekend and enjoy this spectacular fall weather.

My christmas wish is a simple one. i just want to punch ROBIN VENTURA right in the face. EINSTEIN repeated his magic last night and once again, YOU get to play manager. WHITE SOX leading 3-2 in the bottom of the ninth with TWO OUTS and KANSAS CITY has a runner on second.
you have a right hander on the mound and the next batter is the left handed N.AOKI who strikes out very rarely. he's also 3 for 3 with a walk. on deck is the right handed LORENZO CAIN, a high volume strikeout candidate who is oh for 3 on the night. do you:
A) pitch to the left hander or
B) walk the lefty & pitch to the right hander
anyone who knows anything about the game chooses "B" the ONLY correct play is "B"...walking the red hot lefty and trying to end the game with a strikeout from cain. birdbrain, of course, chooses "A" and aoki hits the first pitch for a double and the sox end up losing 4-3.
this is about the eighth time that he has cost the sox in the late innings. ventura is the difference between being 10 games under .500 and almost .500. he absolutely SUCKS.
child abuse, domestic violence, substance abuse. the NFL seems to be confused over the discipline which NEEDS to be handed out. talk show host DAVE KAPLAN had a great idea. "if a player is charged, he is suspended WITH PAY and is ineligible to play until the case is adjudicated in the court." his idea makes perfect sense because the family unit is not affected because the player is still getting paid plus he can pay the attorney fees as he goes along. when a police officer gets in trouble, that's exactly what happens in most cases. removed from active duty with pay until the case is decided.
note to ADRIAN PETERSON: despite your statement to the press, you ARE a child abuser. anyone is this day and age who uses a 'switch' to discipline his child doesn't deserve to have children. as a black man, you're painfully aware of the past when slaves were routinely 'switched' for the slightest infraction and left with a lifetime of scars on their backs & buttocks. times have changed but apparently you didn't. shame on you.
commissioner ROGER GODDELL makes $44 MILLION FREAKING DOLLARS to run the NFL and he has screwed everything up for the last several months. the only good decision he needs to make is where & when to turn in his retirement papers. he is either incompetent or a liar and you don't need either one as a commissioner. tell you what....i'll do the job for a million and you can use donate the other 43 million to abuse centers across the nation. i'm available right now and i'll run the league out of my house.
will the MILWAUKEE BREWERS qualify for collapse of the year if they don't make the playoffs? i think they win it hands down. 12 games left and 1.5 games behind the last spot. the brew crew started the season 20-7 and imploded in late august. sorry for the rest of them but i hope CHEATER RYAN BRAUN wins nothing the rest of his career.
it's a shame that DEREK JETER will end his career without benefit of the playoffs. the YANKEES are 6 games out and bobbing in the water. they lost 4 of their 5 starting pitchers to injury. ouch.
finally, FYI........both the cubs and the sox were eliminated from the pennat chase in the past week or so. if you had a wager, the cubs were eliminated first. and no, neither is going to make the wild card game either.
adios for now.

WOW. that's the only way i can explain the first two weeks of the NFL. the CHICAGO BEARS, left for dead after losing to BUFFALO at home, go on the road and survive an early 17-0 deficit and beat the 49ers on the night they dedicated their new stadium.
the problem is that big wins sometimes carry a big price. can the bears afford to lose PEANUT TILLMAN, JEREMIAH RATLIFF and CHRIS CONTE? none of them saw the end of the game and if tillman's tricep is torn again, you can start planning his retirement party.
TRIPLE PLAY!! a baseball rarity occurred in PITTSBURGH yesterday when the CUBS grounded into the seldon seen occurence on a ball that was hit so hard to third that the batter was out by three steps at the end of the play.
JOSE ABREU of the WHITE SOX just has bad timing. if he had his stats in any other year, he would be a shoo-in for the MVP award but after MIKE TROUT finished as the mvp runner-up in 2012 & 2013, he's the one that has the inside track. the sad part is that abreu's stats are better than trouts but trout has led his team to a division title and the playoffs. trout's numbers are .290-34 homers-107 rbi & obp of .378. abreu is .322-35-102 & .384. he'll have to be satisfied with ROOKIE OF THE YEAR.
i'm one of thos people who believe that everyday players should have seperate awards from pitchers but CLAYTON KERSHAW of the DODGERS has achieved superman status on the mound this season. 19 wins & only 3 losses. an e.r.a. of 1.70 & 219 strikeouts and only 19 walks, a 9-1 ratio for those of you who are mathmatically challenged. kershaw is also hitting .169 which is pretty good for a pitcher today AND he's ALSO a candidate for a gold glove award. other than that, this guy sucks. GIVE HIM EVERY AWARD KNOWN TO MAN!
after three weeks in college football, there's only 13 undefeated teams in the big boy division. five, of course, are from the SEC and regular conference play MIGHT yield one undefeated team so for the sake of discussion, let's make it TEXAS A & M. so that's one for the dance but we need four. FLORIDA STATE is the defending champ so let's send an invitation to tallahasee. i think the OREGON DUCKS are worthy if they can avoid a couple of potholes in the pac 12 so now we need one more. OKLAHOMA? please. BAYLOR? ARIZONA STATE? or are we better off quality wise with a one loss SEC team? hmmmmmmmmm.
congrats to the CHICAGO SKY women's team who advanced to the finals and then couldn't even play on their home court because GARTH BROOKS took over the all state arena for a series of concerts and the sky had to play at the UIC pavilion where no one wants to go. FYI---garth brooks outdrew them, 20,000 fans to 1,245. women's basketball is soooooooooooooooooo bad. they have to find a way to end this league. it's as bad as women's 'professional' softball. ugh.
that's it for now. HAVE A GREAT WEEK!

BITS & PIECES
the items below were previously printed in my sports blog but i think it also belongs here because it's more than sports.
but if they stay in that neighborhood, the sad reality is that two of them will be shot sometime during the next five years, six of them will drop out of high school and four will father children while still a teenager. ELEVEN of them will be the victim of a crime and seven of them will be in the criminal justice system before they turn seventeen.
mom & dad, you can change their futures but you can't win the battle long term in your current neighborhood because the gangbangers will just keep on shooting until they hit someone. this week it was a nine year old & a ten year old being shot in your neighborhood. Gangs, guns, drugs and unemployment is what your neighborhood offers. IF YOU WANT YOUR KID TO GROW UP, THEN MOVE OUT OF THE SOUTH SIDE. he could be the nicest kid in the world but stray bullets don't have a conscience, just a landing zone.
and the paragraph below was published 5 days later......
remember my little story about the little leaguers from JACKIE ROBINSON WEST? well, the sadness begins as it was revealed this week that one of the players has been staying at a cousin's house since May because he's homeless due to mom & dad getting reduced hours at work. exactly why i hope they enjoyed their summer in the sun because winter is fast approaching.

the foundation of her outburst matches many women who suffer from 'battered wife syndrome' and often recant their accusation or simply refuse to testify. as a police officer, i saw it at least two dozen times and most of the men were repeat offenders with the same victim!
an interesting sidebar of this story: rice was indicted on assault charges and eventually entered a 'deferred prosecution' program in which he admits his guilt but after completing the counseling program, the arrest will be stricken from his record. he was then suspended for two games by the nfl. case closed, right? but now the nfl has suspended him indefinitely because of additional video of the same incident. sure seems like double jeopardy to me. you don't get two bites at the apple. my guess is a judge will overturn the second suspension by the nfl and claim that 'a deal is a deal.'

remember MO'NE DAVIS, the twelve year old girl from the little league world series? her signature on a baseball from the series will set you back about three hundred dollars. that's right....three.....zero....zero DOLLARS! what a world.

KUDOS to the
13 kids from the JACKIE ROBINSON LITTLE LEAGUE on the south side of chicago who
won the UNITED STATES CHAMPIONSHIP on saturday before falling to SOUTH KOREA in
the sunday title game. let's hope they go on to be upstanding citizens.

republican governor hopeful BRUCE RAUNER hasn't been seen in a black neighborhood since he got lost on the way to indiana but he suddenly turned up last week in one of the poorest sections of chicago and deposited $800,000.00 in their local credit union to "help out with small business loans." he then donated $200,000 to a community chest. a very nice gesture but most of the black residents were saying "bruce who??"

verrrrrrrrrrrry interesting.

the NFL finally got it right with RAY RICE when they suspended him indefinitely for his elevator knockout of his then girlfriend JANAY PALMER. the sad part is that palmer, who is now mrs. ray rice, is berating everyone associated with rice's long overdue suspension. she doesn't want to testify in the criminal hearing and says that rice simply "made a mistake."verrrrrrrrrrrry interesting.

JUST CATCHING UP
WOW. most super bowl champs are so full of themselves that they struggle the next season and seldom make the playoffs but NOT THE SEATTLE SEAHAWKS. their 36-16 dismantling of the green bay packers in the thursday night opener reminded me of davy crockett at the alamo. absolutely no chance to win.
COACH PETE CARROLL had them ready to play and defend both their title and their home field, at which they are 16-1 over the last 2+ seasons. if opening night was any indication. back to back titles might happen for the first time in ten years when the NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS won in 2004 & 2005.
CLAY MATHEWS, if you're looking for the license plate of the truck that REPEATEDLY ran you over .....meet #40, DERRICK COLEMAN, who opened huge holes for seahawk running backs by 'blowing you up' as you tried to fill the hole. they say hybrid full contact linebackers get old overnight. maybe that happened to mathews. we'll see.
here's a quick bar bet for you to win a beer. the cubs record over the last hundred games? most will give you a negative number but it's 51-49. yes, a winning record.
another beer for you: best record in the national league since august 1st? yep, cubs again.
as i wrote earlier, i don't know if they're ever going to win a world series but if they do, it's going to be more than one in a very short amount of time, similiar to the BOSTON RED SOX who won two titles in four years and three in ten. and the playoffs will become an almost yearly event. just a creepy feeling i'm getting.
largest posterior in baseball? JOSH PHEGLEY of the WHITE SOX. you could set a tray of drinks on it with no worry of it spilling.
THE CHICAGO SKY begin their quest for the world championship tonight in arizona against the PHOENIX MERCURY in a best of five series.
following two games in phoenix, the sky is scheduled to play at home next friday & sunday at the UIC center. four games under .500 during the regular season and they're playing for the title. go figure.
GO BEARS! adios for now.

as i wrote earlier, i don't know if they're ever going to win a world series but if they do, it's going to be more than one in a very short amount of time, similiar to the BOSTON RED SOX who won two titles in four years and three in ten. and the playoffs will become an almost yearly event. just a creepy feeling i'm getting.
largest posterior in baseball? JOSH PHEGLEY of the WHITE SOX. you could set a tray of drinks on it with no worry of it spilling.
THE CHICAGO SKY begin their quest for the world championship tonight in arizona against the PHOENIX MERCURY in a best of five series.
following two games in phoenix, the sky is scheduled to play at home next friday & sunday at the UIC center. four games under .500 during the regular season and they're playing for the title. go figure.
GO BEARS! adios for now.

MOSTLY CUBS
Look for the cubs to shut down ANTHONY RIZZO because of his lingering back problems. he's scheduled for a MRI today and methinks a bulging or ruptured disc may be the problem and if so, no sense risking further damage. do what you have to do medically and be ready for 2015.
JORGE SOLER of the cubs has one of the prettiest swings i've seen in a long time, short and to the point, unlike the wide looping swing of JAVY BAEZ.
baez was quoted recently "i don't care if i strike out three hundred times, i'm chopping wood every time i'm up there." does that sound remarkably similar to STARLIN CASTRO? 'uncoachable' is not a word you want stuck on you early in your career but i think baez has joined that club. there is NO WAY that super egos baez & castro can exist in the same locker room. look for castro to be traded for pitching help.
speaking of castro, he scored zero points with the bosses or his teammates the other night when he failed to run after hitting what he thought was a home run with the cubs trailing 6-4. problem was the ball bounced off the fence 400 feet away and castro only got a single and as we all know, this isn't the first time he's done that. next hitter got a single which would have tied the game. ouch.
RICK RENTERIA blew a chance to show the new kids that that type of behavior won't be tolerated by letting castro stay in the game AND start the next day. the simple learning tool was yank him immediately for his lack of hustle and sit him the next day. then EVERYONE understands that selfish bullshit and hot dogging won't be tolerated.
ok, gotta be fair to the girls. THE CHICAGO SKY forced a deciding game in the eastern conference finals by beating the INDIANA FEVER 78-74 in double overtime. the big game is wednesday night in indianapolis. good luck.
gotta run. more later.
